ON TOUR: GLASGOW

23 April: After a long and tiring train journey from London to Glasgow this morning the orchestra performed in the recently restored Glasgow City Hall. The journey was tiring in the sense that the incessant radio announcements on the train made it virtually impossible to get any rest during the five hour journey. The British really do need to have a lesson on long distance train travel from the Germans.

Compared to Edinburgh, Glasgow is more of a small town although with two of the most successful Scottish football teams here (Celtic and Glasgow Rangers) there is no shortage of passion or pride in its people.

Although the audience was a wee bit smaller in numbers by comparison to other performances we have done whilst in Europe, their reduced numbers were not evident during the final applause of the night. It must be all that practice the locals have from cheering on their team during local football derbies, or better still when the English visit.

Glasgow may well have appeared to be a small town, but I think you will find that it is quite a large town - certainly when compared to Edinburgh!

I was one of the "wee bit smaller" audience. While the hall was not full, it wasn't that bad! It seems to me that the ACO were slightly unlucky in the timing of the Glasgow concert. The next two nights at the City Hall featured appealing concerts by the BBC SSO and SCO and then the RSNO played at the Royal Concert Hall on the Saturday.

Perhaps, if you visit Glasgow again, you will get a better slot. I certainly hope so since the concert itself was fabulous.

Quite true, the backstage crew as well as a member of the SCO who attended the concert told us that the audience was considered to be a very good size even when compared to audiences at SCO concerts. Incidentally it was the stage manager (a local Glaswegian) who made the comparison between Edinburgh and Glasgow so I am sorry if this is incorrect.
You have an amazing hall there so we would definitely love another opportunity to perform in it again.
