Cellist Steven Isserlis (touring with us in August) has many strings to his bow, one of which is regularly contributing to newspapers (he's also written children's books). Here's a selection of his opinion pieces about being a performer and other musical matters:
The Bach Suites
Beethoven Cello Sonatas
When he's not writing about composers, he's done pieces on:
Playing chamber music with irregular partners
Hitler's record collection
The difficulties of travelling with a cello

The first time I heard Isserlis play was at an ACO concert five years ago and I was completely transported. That started me on the path to becoming an unashamed, complete Isserlisophile, having now collected every one of his recordings.
I'm very glad to hear that Julian Thompson and Richard Tognetti share my opinion that Isserlis is the finest living cellist. For me he's just completely magical!
Apart from his playing, his books on composers are wonderful for children and for the child in each of us. No musical household can afford to be without them!
I am so grateful to the ACO for bringing Isserlis out to OZ again to play for us after a three year drought!
My one plea is that you please book him immediately again - preferably to play the Schumann Cello Concerto! If that's not possible, then I'd settle for one of the Haydn cello concertos.
